Post 102 juniors split

AHOSKIE – Local Post 102 and Perquimans County split a junior American Legion baseball doubleheader here Saturday afternoon with Ahoskie winning the first game 5-4 and Post 126 taking a slugfest in the nightcap, 18-10.

In the first game Trent Munford’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the fifth propelled the home team to a one-run win.

Perquimans led 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning before Ahoskie exploded for four runs of their own to come back and tie. Evan Lassiter singled, stole second base, and scored on a Hunter Mitchell RBI double. Mitchell later scored on a wild pitch. Trevor Lee walked and scored on a Grant Little RBI double and Little scored the final run of the inning when Zeb Askew reached on an error.

With the game tied at 4-4 after four complete, Ahoskie collected the game-winner in the bottom of the fifth. After Mitchell singled, Lee and Little drew walks to load the bases before Munford’s heroics.

Jarrett Burden pitched four-and-one-third innings, allowing three hits. Little pitched the final two-thirds of an inning and gets credit for the win in relief.

Ahoskie had six hits, two by Mitchell and one apiece from Lassiter, Little, Munford, and Askew.

Perquimans won the second game 18-10, jumping out to a 6-1 lead after the first and upped it to 8-1 by the top of the second. Ahoskie scored three runs in the bottom of the second on a Lee three-run double and trailed 8-4. Perquimans then put the game away with 10 runs in the top of the third for an 18-4 mark.

Ahoskie scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth and almost completed the comeback. Little had a two-run single, and Mitchell had a two-run triple, with the other two runs scoring on errors for the 18-10 final.

Ahoskie had 10 hits as Lee and Little had two each while Mitchell, Munford, Askew, Jordan Robinson, Evan Lassiter, and Zach Lassiter had one hit apiece.

Ahoskie is now 3-9 and 2-6 in the conference. Post 102 hosted Beaufort County on Monday in a game not complete at press-time, and will travel to Bear Grass for a 7 p.m. game on Thursday.
