WILSON – A trio of Windsor pitchers combined on a five-hitter as Post 37 won its second game of the summer with an 8-5 junior American Legion baseball win here Saturday afternoon.

Caleb Damo continued his hot hitting, driving in three of the Windsor runs.

“It was a good day for the Rebels,” said a grinning coach Bobby Harmon. “These kids showed tremendous toughness for battling the heat and putting the Washington loss behind us.  Scoop (Hoggard) got into some trouble with control issues, but pitched his way out of it.  Our defense was really good, especially DaQuan (Wilson) up the middle.  Miller (Trowell) and Caleb also had big hits for us.  I love the way this team is coming together”

Windsor plated the first two runs of the game in the top of the first inning.  Wilson drew a one-out walk, stole second base, and moved to third on Trenton White’s base hit.  After a strike out, Damo doubled into the gap in left centerfield scoring Wilson and White and it was 2-0, Windsor, after a half-inning of play.

Wilson got a run back in the bottom of the first before Post 37 struck again in the second.  Brandon Roberson got a leadoff double and went to third on a wild pitch. One out later, Jared Speight singled to center, scoring Roberson, and Windsor again had a two-run lead, 3-1.

Another Rebel run came in the top of the third when Wilson was hit by a pitch and then he went to second on Miller Trowell’s base hit.  Wilson was forced at third on a double-play; but later, Trowell stole third, and scored when Damo reached on an error.  It was 4-1, Post 37, after three complete innings of baseball.

Windsor looked to put the game away with three runs in the top of the fifth when the Rebels started the inning by loading the bases. Wilson scored the first run on a sac-fly by Damo, Hoggard singled in Trowell with the second run, and the final run of the frame came when the bases were re-loaded and Daniel Castelloe scored Lance Freeman with the second sac-fly of the inning.  Windsor led it 7-1.

Wilson got two runs each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to pull within two at 7-5 before Windsor picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Damo walked, went to second on a passed ball, and took third when Hoggard singled, and Damo came home on another passed ball.   The three-run cushion proved to be enough as Trenton White came on in relief and despite giving up a lead-off single, retired the next three in a row for the Windsor conference win.

Of the Rebels’ eight hits, Trowell and Hoggard had two each while Wilson, Roberson, Damo, and Speight had one apiece for the other four.  Hoggard got the win on the mound despite giving up seven walks. He gave up just two hits and struck out a pair in five innings of work. Roberson also pitched, giving up a hit and a run; and the scoreless seventh earned White the save.

Windsor raised its overall record to 2-1 and the win left them 0-1 in conference play.  They will visit Ahoskie Post 102 tonight (Thursday) at Hertford County High baseball field in a 7 p.m. contest before a split double-header on Saturday against the Cary Bulls at 12:30, and a re-match with Ahoskie at 4 p.m.; both games in Windsor at Bertie High School field.
