Sylvia S. Askew

AHOSKIE, NC – Sylvia “Peggy” Swain Askew, age 74,  passed away on May 31, 2016 at the Gates House Assisted Living of Gatesville, NC.

Mrs. Askew was born in Halifax County, NC on January 13, 1942, a daughter of the late Heaber and Lucy Eure Swain. She attended Early’s Baptist Church. Peggy had an infectious smile and was one who really cared for people. She was a true nurturing, caring person, which was evident in her dedication as a registered nurse for Vidant Roanoke Chowan Hospital, serving as nursing supervisor for several years, and working with the Hertford County Home Health.  She was also a founder and was very active in the Ahoskie Rescue Squad ladies auxiliary

Besides her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll L. Askew, Sr.; her biological father, Horace Clark; and her sister, Linda Evans.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Jennifer Mizelle, and husband, Timothy of Colerain, NC; her son, Carroll L. Askew Jr. and wife, Elaine of Ahoskie, NC; four grandsons, Brian Mizelle and wife Sarah of Williamston, NC, Hunter Mizelle and wife Callie, and Adam Mizelle of Colerain, NC, and Thomas Askew of Ahoskie, NC; two granddaughters, Christy Eure and husband Ronnie of Ahoskie, and Carol Lynn Askew of Ahoskie; two great grandsons, Bentley Mizelle of Colerain, and  Austin Eure of Ahoskie;  and a great granddaughter, Alexa Eure of Ahoskie. Also surviving are two sisters, Jean Barmer of Rich Square, NC, and Johanna Brittenham of Ahoskie, NC; and three brothers, Jackie Brittenham and wife Joyce of Ahoskie, Mike Clark and wife Tina of Chesapeake, VA, and Stan Clark of Norfolk, VA.

The family will receive friends at Garrett Sykes Funeral Service of Ahoskie on Thursday, June 2, 2016, from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm and other times at Peggy’s home.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, June 3, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Garrett Sykes Funeral Service, Ahoskie, NC, with Pastor Paul Ange officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens.
