Ahoskie drops American Legion baseball opener

AHOSKIE – Albemarle Post 84 downed Ahoskie Post 102 by a 12-3 final here Wednesday night in the Junior American Legion baseball season opener for both teams.
Albemarle opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Ahoskie would halve that lead with a run in the bottom of the frame. Trevor Lee singled to centerfield, stole second base and went to third on an Evan Lassiter ground out. Lee scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-1, Albemarle, after one inning of baseball.
Post 84 added three more runs in the top of the third while Ahoskie scored one run in their half of the inning. Lee doubled into the gap in right centerfield and then went to third on a Steven Futrell single to center. Lassiter walked to load the bases as Lee scored later on a Bradley Edwards sacrifice fly ball. Albemarle leads 5-2 after three innings.
Post 102 scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth. Lassiter had an infield single, went to second on a wild pitch and advanced to third on an Edwards ground out. Lassiter scored on Edward Bradley’s RBI ground out. Ahoskie had pulled within two, but Albemarle led it 5-3 thru five.
Albemarle broke the game open with five runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-3 lead after six. Post 84 got its final two runs in the top of the seventh for the nine-run victory.
Post 102 had four hits. Lee had two hits while Futrell and Lassiter had one hit each.
Ahoskie used four pitchers. Larry Barnes started, hurled the first three innings, and took the loss. Lassiter, Lee, and Bradley also pitched for Post 102.
Ahoskie is 0-1 and 0-1 in conference play. Post 102 plays its next four games on the road beginning Monday in Beaufort County against Washington with a 7 p.m. start.
