Local tracksters headed to states

Bertie High freshman Destiny Clark is one of several area track and field athletes who have qualified for the NC High School Athletic Association state championships this weekend in Greensboro at NC A&T State University. At the 2A Eastern Regionals in Wilson last week, Destiny had a state qualifying distance of 14 feet-8.50 inches in the long jump.

At the 1A East Regionals at Heide Trask High in Rocky Point, the Gates County High 4×800 Meter relay team of Will Leary, K.J. Riddick, Kevonte Leary, and Hagan Phillips has qualified with a time of 9:17:53. Will Leary also qualified in the boys 800M run at 2:13:28. Gates is also sending their 4x100M relay team of Vincent Hart, Demonte Miller, Robert Walker, and C.J. Holley, who ran the distance in 46:15.

Other 1A qualifiers include Northampton County’s Rashauna Grant in the girls’ high jump with a leap of 4 feet-8 inches.

A trio of Hertford County High athletes will compete in the state meet; and one performer in three events: Joya Blackwell in the girls 100M hurdles (15:59), girls triple jump (34-11:75), and high jump (5:01). Rayshaun Beamon will compete in the boys 300M hurdles (41.97) and Malcolm Demeron in the boys’ long jump (21:03.25).
