KELFORD – A Bertie County man is dead and both the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation are working together to solve the case.

The death marks the second homicide discovery in Bertie County in the last seven days.

According to Sheriff John Holley, a body was discovered at 118 David Drive on Thursday, April 14, at approximately 2:50 p.m.

The deceased was later identified as 18 year old Shaquan Jamar Taylor.

Holley made no mention of a suspect in the case, or a motive.

The location of the homicide is just south of Kelford off NC-308 where Main Street becomes Governor’s Road.

Holley said on Thursday that Taylor had been shot, but that the official cause of death is pending an autopsy and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information in this case is urged to call the Bertie County Sheriff’s Office at 252-794-5330 or the SBI Tip Line at 336-209-5201.

Last Thursday, the decapitated body of Chowan County jail escapee Kelvin Singleton was discovered off Ashland Church Road in eastern Bertie County near Midway. Officials believe Singleton’s nude, decomposing body had been brought to the discovery site.

Holley said the Kelford murder is not related to the case from last week. That investigation is also still ongoing.
