EURE – An 88-year-old Eure woman became the local area’s first motor vehicle fatality of 2016 following a two-car crash on US 158 in Gates County on Tuesday.

Mary Felton Eure of Turner Road died Wednesday at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville due to injuries sustained in the accident that occurred approximately 26 hours earlier, according to information provided by the North Carolina Highway Patrol’s Troop A / District II office in Ahoskie.

Her son, 53-year-old Robert Earl Eure of the same Turner Road address, was seriously injured in the accident. He is hospitalized at Vidant Medical Center.

According to a report filed by NCHP Trooper G.L. Bunch, Mr. Eure was operating a 2006 Nissan passenger car at approximately 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday with his mother as a front seat passenger. He was traveling north on White Oak Road and had stopped his vehicle at the stop sign at the intersection of US 158. Bunch’s report showed that Eure was in the process of turning his vehicle left onto the westbound lane of US 158. At the same time a 2014 Hyundai SUV, driven by Charles Wamsley, 68, of Frostburg, MD, was traveling east on US 158.

The two vehicles collided in the eastbound lane of US 158, with Eure’s car spinning around and coming to a stop in the middle of the road while Wamsley’s SUV traveled off the road and came to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lane.

Neither Wamsley nor his passenger, Norma Wamsley, were injured. They were not transported by ambulance to any medical facility.

Charges in the accident are pending.

The fatal wreck was the first of 2016 in the NCHP’s Troop A / District 2 area which includes Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties.
