Pauline H. Matthews

MURFREESBORO – Pauline Hurst Matthews, age 83, of Murfreesboro, NC passed away on August 9, 2015 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.
Mrs. Matthews was born in Halifax County on June 1, 1932, a daughter of the late Otha Melvin and Katie Epps Hurst. In June of 1951, she married her soulmate, George Benjamin Matthews, and enjoyed being a wife to him and mother to her two sons. She was a longtime member of Mt.Tabor Baptist Church. For as long as she was able, Pauline was an avid reader, especially enjoying biographies.
Besides her parents and husband, Pauline was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Hurst; and a sister, Kathleen Felton.
Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Melvin Matthews and wife, Deborah, and Thelton Matthews and wife, Roberta of Murfreesboro, NC; two sisters, Roseleen H. Harris of Murfreesboro, NC, and Mollie Duvall of Eustis, FL; and a brother, Lee R. Hurst and wife, Barbara of Chesapeake, VA. Also surviving are her granddaughters, April and Candace Matthews; grandson, Frankie Benjamin Matthews and wife, Brittney; a great granddaughter, Jaliyah Miller; and a great grandson, N’Kenge Roberts.
The family will receive friends at the home.
A celebration of life service was held on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at the Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, with Rev. Al Jarrell, officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
