WILLIAMSTON – Margaret McDaniel Griffin, 95, died peacefully early Tuesday morning March 10, 2015 at her home on Roosevelt Drive.

She was born on August 2, 1919 to Simon Peter McDaniel and Olivia Blowe McDaniel. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, James E. (Jay) Griffin; her brothers, Stanley McDaniel and Roger McDaniel; a sister, Helen McDaniel Joyner; and her twin sister, Marjorie McDaniel Elliott.

Margaret attended and graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) in Greenville. She taught home economics in the Martin County school system before marrying James Edwin (Jay) Griffin on December 30, 1952.

She will be remembered as an avid gardener, flower arranger, cook, artist and civic leader. An active member of the Williamston First Christian Church as well as the Williamston Womans’ Club and the Martin County Historical Society, she served in a variety of leadership roles. She also served for a number of years as the Secretary and later, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Martin General Hospital.

Margaret is survived by twin nephews, Don and Dan Joyner of Ahoskie; and nephews, Robert and Jesse McDaniel of Raleigh.

A graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, March 15, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery with the Rev. Karen Kelly and the Rev. Jim Bussell officiating. Visitation will be held graveside following the service. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Williamston First Christian Church Memorial Fund or Altar Guild.
