RICH SQUARE – Two individuals were shot near here early Wednesday afternoon.

The Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, joined by the SBI, is investigating the shooting, which occurred at around 1:45 p.m. at a residence on the Bryant Town Road, near the Dick Harmony Road, southwest of Rich Square.

According to NCSO Major Darryl Harmon, a vehicle entered the driveway of a residence on Bryant Town Road. The driver and two other males were in that vehicle.

“Our investigation up until this point shows that an individual came out of the house and began firing shots at the vehicle,” Harmon said early Wednesday evening. “The vehicle then backed out of the driveway and crashed into a tree on the other side of the road. The three males inside the vehicle exited the vehicle and ran because our investigation shows that shots were still being fired at that point.”

Harmon added that two of the males in the car were found a short time later, both suffering from gunshot wounds. They were both airlifted to Vidant Medical Center. Their medical condition is unknown.

The third person in the vehicle was found in a wooded area near the scene around 6:15 p.m. Harmon said that victim was not injured.

“At this point we are actively seeking the person who fired the shots,” Harmon stated. “He left the scene in a vehicle prior to our arrival.”

As of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Harmon said the investigation was not yet at a point where the name of the suspect could be released.
