Oscar G. Harris

SCOTLAND NECK – Oscar Godwin Harris, age 92 of Scotland Neck, passed away on February 24, 2015 at the Bryan Long Term Health Care Center in Scotland Neck, NC.

He served four years in the Army during WWII, worked at Halifax Hosiery Mill for 48 years, retiring in 1988, and was a member of the Scotland Neck United Methodist Church.

Oscar married the love of his life, Irma in 1946. They were married for 63 years when she passed away in 2009. Oscar loved to garden but, he is best known by many for his personal love of the game. Having been an athlete himself growing up, Oscar loved sports. At the college level Duke was his team, but at the local level he was a devoted fan of Hobgood Academy. Oscar was well known throughout the state for sitting in a chair at the end of a gym or on the sidelines to support his Raiders.

Along with his wife, Irma, he is preceded in death by his parents, Nellie Dickens and William Watson Harris; one sister, Willie Grey Pittman; a nephew, Ronnie Pittman; his brother-in-law, Robert Harrell; and a sister-in-law, Janice Harrell.

Oscar is survived by three nieces, Mary Jo Willis of Southport, NC, Brenda Pittman of Tarboro, NC and Joy Bennett and her husband, Mike of Jackson, NC; a nephew, Bobby Harrell and his wife, Glenda of Jackson, NC; and the very dear family of Eddie and Trudy Braxton of Scotland Neck, NC.

A visitation for Oscar will be held at Scotland Neck United Methodist Church in Scotland Neck, Saturday, February 28, 2015 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. There will be a Celebration of Life Service at the church beginning at 2:30 p.m. following the visitation. The entombment will follow at the Baptist Cemetery in Scotland Neck, NC. Rev. Rob Licht and Dr. James Drake will be officiating the service.

Friends and family are welcome to visit at other times at the home of Eddie and Trudy Braxton.
