WOODLAND – Helen McDaniel Joyner, 100, of Woodland, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 22, 2014 in Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.
She was born on January 12, 1914 in Woodland, NC to Simon Peter McDaniel and Olivia Blowe McDaniel. She was preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, Wingate Gordon Joyner; and her brothers, Stanley McDaniel and Roger McDaniel; and her sister, Marjorie McDaniel Elliott.
Mrs. Joyner attended Chowan College in Murfreesboro, NC and graduated from East Carolina Teachers College (now East Carolina University) in Greenville, NC. She was an elementary school teacher in Johnston and Northampton Counties prior to her marriage to Wingate Gordon Joyner of Woodland after World War II. She worked with her husband in the family business, Joyner Trucking Company, as well as being a homemaker. She was an active member of Woodland Baptist Church her entire life.
Mrs. Joyner is survived by her twin sons, Wingate Gordon Joyner, Jr. (Don) and Walter Daniels Joyner (Dan), both of Ahoskie, NC; grandchildren, Wingate Gordon Joyner, III (Win), and Elizabeth Lucille Whitley Joyner (Elizabeth), both of Winston-Salem, NC, Walter Daniels Joyner, Jr. (Walt) of Nags Head, NC, and Landis Margaret Joyner Chamblee (Landis) (husband, Will) of Ahoskie, NC; and her sister, Margaret McDaniel Griffin of Williamston, NC; as well as two nieces and two nephews.
Visitation will be on Sunday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. at Woodland Baptist Church with a memorial service following the visitation at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Ralph J. Brabban officiating.
