Robert D. Hasty

ROANOKE RAPIDS – Mr. Robert Diego Hasty was born on April 20, 1954 in NorthamptonCounty to the late William Earl “Scoot” Hasty and Franco Cuccinotta-Hasty.  He departed this earthly life on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Diego received his education in Northampton County.  He graduated from Northampton County High School in 1972.  He received a scholarship and played baseball at Chowan College.  He continued his education and graduated from Elon University in 1977 with a BS Degree.

Diego was baptized and was a member of Galatia Baptist Church where he remained a member until his death.

Diego was employed as a teacher, mentor and coach at the following schools: Weldon High School, Northampton County High School East, Northampton County High School West, Hertford County High School, and Kipp Pride High.

Diego married Barbara Bradley on April 20, 1984. This union was blessed with two children, Giancarlo Diego and Alazzia Johnelle.  He loved his children dearly.

Coach Hasty was well-known for coaching football and basketball.  During his career his teams received many championships and titles.  He is known for being the only coach in Northampton County to take his football team to a state championship (NCHSAA 1A Football State Championship).

Diego leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 30 years, Barbara Bradley-Hasty; his wonderful children, Giancarlo Diego Hasty and Alazzia Johnelle Hasty; his caring mother, Franca Cuccinotta-Hasty; his mother-in-law, Bernice Bradley; a sister-in-law, Porcher D. Bradley; brothers-in-law, Eric D. Bradley and John K. Bradley; two nieces and two nephews; several aunts and uncles; two special friends, David Jones and Mike Newsome; a host of cousins; and the Kipp Pride High School Family.

Diego will be remembered for the love of his family, coaching, students, and his most endeared pets.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at The Centre on the campus of Halifax Community College, with the Rev. Edwin Horsley officiating.

These professional services were entrusted to H.D. Pope Funeral Home, located at 520 Smith Church Road in Roanoke Rapids.
