AULANDER – Mr. Robert Earl Whitaker, age 87 of Aulander, died Tuesday, April 29, 2014.

Mr. Whitaker was born November 19, 1926 in Aulander, the son of the late John W. Whitaker and Della A. Whitaker. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Britton Whitaker; and a sister, Dee Dardin.

He was a World War II Navy Veteran and served his country from 1942 until 1946.  He retired from the NC Department of Transportation and retired from farming a few years ago.  He was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church and a member of the St. John’s Fire Department.

He is survived by a brother, Frank Whitaker of Aulander; and a sister, Ercell Truitt of Potecasi; his half sister, Jean Lawrence; and half brother, Tommy Lawrence Jr. along with many nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Clara Harris of St. John’s.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 3, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Massey Funeral Home in Aulander. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time.
