Doug Whitley

COMO – Wallace Douglas “Doug” Whitley, Sr., 72, passed away April 13, 2014.

Doug was born in Roanoke Rapids, a son of the late Aubrey Lee Whitley, Sr. and Ruby Conwell Whitley. He was a former resident of Conway and a former member of the Conway Volunteer Fire Department. Doug was a Navy veteran and a retired electrician from International Paper after 40 years of service. He enjoyed saltwater fishing and scuba diving and spending time with his grandchildren.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 47 years, Rebecca Flythe Whitley; two sons, Wallace Douglas “Doug” Whitley, Jr. and his wife, Gay, of Murfreesboro, and Chad Everett Whitley, Sr. and his wife, Tori of Conway; one brother, Aubrey Lee Whitley, Jr. of Conway; one step-sister, Mary Lou Chariker of Burlington; five grandchildren, Mandy, Whitt, C.J., Emma and Jackson Whitley; one brother-in-law, Ricky Flythe and his wife, Vicky, of Conway and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Sumner and her husband, Charlie Bruce, of Como, and Diane Gray and her husband, Glenn of Murfreesboro.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, VA with the Rev. Suzanne Cobb officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service and suggest memorials be made to either the Como or Conway Fire Department.
