AHOSKIE – Nationally renowned KB and The Shifters Band will perform at a Feb. 15 fundraiser for the local American Legion Post 102 Auxiliary.
This Valentine’s Day weekend dance will be held from 8 p.m. until 12 midnight at Beechwood Country Club. Tickets, which are selling fast, are available only in advance ($15 per person) by calling Rick or Debbie Myers at 252-332-2039 or 252-332-5707.
Proceeds from the event will assist the Legion Auxiliary in their ongoing efforts to help needy military veterans in the Roanoke-Chowan area.
“Among the projects the Auxiliary currently has ongoing is adopting a local veteran who resides in a local assisted living facility and does not have any family members here locally,” said Debbie Myers, a member of the Post 102 Auxiliary. “We go to visit with him and provide personal items which would normally be provided by his family.”
Debbie Myers added that Auxiliary members also visit with local military veterans and their spouses who have been ill.
“We carry them a hot meal, because when you’re sick the last thing you think about is cooking,” she stated.
The Post 102 Auxiliary also thinks about local members of the U.S. Armed Forces who are stationed overseas during Christmas.
“Along with the holiday package we mail to that local soldier, we always include one additional package for them to share with one of their military buddies who does not regularly receive a package from their home,” Debbie Myers said. “These are just a few of the ways that we try to support our veterans here at home and those active duty military members who are thousands of miles away from home and protecting our freedom. We feel it’s the least we can do because we appreciate all they do, or have done, for us.”
Businesses can also help sponsor the Valentine’s dance. Call the Myers at the phone numbers listed above for more information.
Only a few tickets remain for the Feb. 15 dance, especially with the popular KB and The Shifters providing the music. The local group was formed 16 months ago and has already enjoyed enormous success.
This past November, Fessa John Hooks’ syndicated radio show listed the ratings from CASHBOX and placed “Call Me” by KB and The Shifters at number one in the Beach Music category. CASHBOX is one of the oldest and respected song charts in the country. It covers Country, R&B, Rock and Roll, Top 40 and Beach Music.
Also in November, the band traveled to Myrtle Beach, SC for the annual CAMMY (Carolina Beach Music) Awards. KB and The Shifters were among the five nominees for the Rising Star of the Year Award. They are also part of a compilation CD (Carolina Shag IV), containing ‘Call Me’ and other various artists such as Barbara Carr and the Craig Woolard Band, that was up for an award.
KB and The Shifters is comprised of retired Hertford County Magistrate Bobby Beard of Ahoskie who plays the sax and harmonica; drummer Robert Earl Dilday of Gates County (who played with the original Shifters back in the late 60’s); Karen and Parks Boyd of Scotland Neck, who provide vocals and guitar respectively; Jan Raines, a former State Highway Patrol Trooper in the Ahoskie office who now lives in Greenville, who plays the trumpet and provides vocals; Ahoskie’s David Barnes who strums the bass guitar; and keyboardist Ken Hardee of Roanoke Rapids.
