COLERAIN – Bertie County residents know what it’s like to lose all their worldly possessions.

From tornadoes to floods, natural disasters have impacted county residents. However, they also know what it’s like to be the recipient of aid to help them get back on their feet.

On Saturday, Dec. 28, one Bertie County church plans to help one organization that came to the county to help pick up the pieces and rebuild in the aftermath of the deadly tornadoes that struck in April of 2011.

Elm Grove Baptist Church is planning a 30-mile relay walk on that day. “Walk for Samaritan’s Purse” is designed to raise funds for that organization in their current efforts to aid typhoon survivors in the Philippines as well as Americans impacted by recent winter storms in the mid-west.

“Bertie County and the Town of Windsor have seen what natural disasters can do to a town and county.  Help us help Samaritan’s Purse after what they did for us and the continuing efforts they put forth to help those around the world impacted by disasters,” said Jennifer Evans of Elm Grove Baptist.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone who has been affected,” she added. Our community has seen very similar situations. During our time of need, Samaritan’s Purse was there for many of us and our neighbors.  Now the members of Elm Grove Baptist Church would like to return the favor.”

Evans said the walk will begin at the church, to Windsor, and return to the church. Those taking part can walk pre-determined distances and “relay” with others to complete the round-trip. She encouraged those planning to participate to solicit sponsorships or donate directly to Samaritan’s Purse.

“I understand that the Christmas season is a very busy time for everyone.  It is also the time for celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ and a time for giving. Please consider a gift to Samaritan’s Purse,” Evans said.
