Front Porch Living arrives!

AHOSKIE – An area rich in Native American history is the cover story of the latest Front Porch Living magazine.

The magazine – the only one devoted entirely to the four counties that comprise the Roanoke-Chowan area – is now entering its fourth year. It is published quarterly by Roanoke-Chowan Publications and distributed throughout the region.

The Fall – 2013 edition features a spread on the local Meherrin Indians, a tribe that dates back to 1650. That’s just the written history; the tribe is older than that era.

And speaking of history, the latest Front Porch Living has a feature on the local impact of the Civil War. The Murfreesboro Historical Association is hosting a series of events to mark the sesquicentennial of the War Between the States, to include the recorded history of the burning of Winton; how Murfreesboro was spared; and the Battle of Boon’s Mill near Jackson.

Two local artists are also featured in the latest Front Porch Living – Cathy McInville of Conway and James Messer of Ahoskie.

And be sure to check out an article and photos of what the Roanoke-Cashie River Center in Windsor has to offer.

Gatesville is the “My Town” feature. The story and article center on the architecture of historic Gatesville homes.

The magazine takes its name from the easy lifestyle of the local four-county area. It is solely the work of the same people that bring you the Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald, Gates County Index, and The Portal, a daily e-mail.

Copies of “Front Porch Living” are distributed at over 100 locations throughout the four-county area….places where people gather on a routine basis; medical facilities, restaurants, businesses, chamber of commerce offices, county/municipal government offices, hair salons, etc. They are also available at the Roanoke-Chowan Publications office, located at the intersection of Main Street and Catherine Creek Road in downtown Ahoskie.

If you miss seeing a copy, call 252-332-7213.

Mail subscriptions are available for only $20 per year (four issues).
