Barbara Ann Davenport

NASHVILLE – Barbara Ann Chappell Davenport, 81, of 1522 Glen Eagles Court, died Monday, October 7, 2013 in Universal Health Care, Nashville.

Mrs. Davenport was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Arthur R. and Hattie Bateman Chappell. Formerly employed as a beautician, she and her husband also for many years owned and operated Bi-Rite Grocery in Hertford, and after retiring from that, she worked at the Chowan Senior Center where she was the coordinator for the Meals on Wheels Program.  A former member of Bethlehem Church of Christ in Hertford, she had more recently attended Ebeneezer Pentecostal Holiness Church in Nashville.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Stancil V. Davenport, Jr.

Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Stancil Van Davenport, Sr.; a daughter, Stacy Davenport-Baird and husband, Richard, of Nashville; a son, Eugene C. Davenport and wife, Linda, of Cofield; two brothers, Ralph Chappell of Hampton, VA and Arthur Chappell of Clayton; five grandchildren, Bobbi Jean Davenport, Amy Askew, Ginger Davenport, Matthew Davenport, and Brittney Gregory; and five great-grandchildren, Kirk Davenport, Clint Davenport, William Davenport, Landon Perry, and Rylan Perry.

A private graveside service was held in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton.  A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m. in Ebeneezer Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Vernon Potter, Jr.
