Coach Stephen Flack

HARRISONBURG, VA – Coach Stephen Flack, 63, of Harrisonburg, VA passed away April 4, 2013. Mr. Flack was born January 24, 1950 at Fort Lee in VA, and was the son of the late Norma Orville Flack and Margaret Shockey Flack.

He was a graduate of Chowan College, East Tennessee State University, and University of Southern Mississippi. Coach was currently serving as a board member on the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Sports Commission. He was also a member of the Shenandoah Basketball Officials Association, Harrisonburg Umpires Association, Shenvalee Golf Club, New Market, VA, Horseshoe Hunt Club, McKinney, VA, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aeire #4150, the Chowan Alumni Association, and the East Tennessee State University Alumni Association.

Stephen was a member of the United States Marine Corp from 1972-1974, earning the honors of Platoon Honor Man, Series Honor Man (top among 288 Marines), and the Blues Award.

Stephen was currently employed at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community in the Building and Grounds department. From 2010-2012 he was a faculty member at James Madison University in the School of Hospitality, Sport & Recreation Management. Stephen and Cookie owned and operated Downtown 56 from 2006-2009.

From 1995-2004, Coach Flack was an Assistant Professor, Chairman of Sports Management, and Head Baseball Coach at Chowan University.

In 1975, Stephen began his tenure as Physical Education educator and Coach in numerous schools, including Broadway High School and Spotswood High School. During his high school career at Dinwiddie High School in Dinwiddie, VA, Stephen earned 11 letters (Football, Basketball, Baseball, Track), Senior Athlete of the Year, and was the first athlete to letter in four sports. In 2002 Stephen was elected into the Dinwiddie High School Hall of Fame.

On August 27, 2005 he married Cookie Lam who survives.

The Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. at Muhlenberg Lutheran Church, Harrisonburg, VA with the Reverend William Rosenow and the Reverend Brett Davis officiating.
