TARBORO — An Ahoskie man fell to his death from an overpass around 2:45 a.m. Sunday, March 24 according to a press release issued by the Tarboro Police Department.

Juan Antonio-Rubio Torres, 32, was pronounced dead at the scene where he reportedly fell from the Western Boulevard overpass onto Anaconda Road. Although the incident was ruled “accidental,” comments from a friend who was with Torres when the incident occurred point to a possible suicide.

According to report, Torres and his friends were at Paraiso Club on Northern Boulevard, located less than a half of mile from where the incident occurred.

That group headed to the nearest hotel.

The victim’s friend said Torres had talked about committing suicide often, including the night of the incident.

When they arrived at the overpass, Torres stepped over the guard rail and one of the friends pulled him to the ground, according to reports. Torres apparently stepped back over the rail again and fell to his death.

An autopsy report revealed that there were no additional injuries to Torres body that was not consistent with the ones he sustained from the fall. The results of a toxicology examination are pending.

Torres’ mother, who lives in Mexico, has been contacted concerning her son’s death. Because of immigration guidelines, it may be a month before she can come to America.
