SEVERN – A 72-year-old Roanoke Rapids man died Thursday in a single-vehicle crash in the Severn area, according to the state Highway Patrol.

Trooper J.D. Warren said investigation by Trooper A.A. Lucas determined Loyd Raymond Edwards was driving his GMC Sonoma pickup west on Severn Road around 3 p.m. when he ran off the left side of the road while delivering newspapers.

The vehicle struck a ditch and overturned several times, ejecting Edwards.

Warren said Edwards was not wearing a seatbelt. There were no extenuating circumstances such as speed or alcohol and it is possibly related to medical problems.
