MURFREESBORO – The Chowan University men’s basketball team fell to the Fayetteville State Broncos 81-75 in overtime in their first CIAA match-up of the season on Thursday evening.

The Hawks had four players turn in double digits on the night: Kyree Bethel (18), Ashante Ross (17), Quinton McDuffie (16) and Rickey Lamb (10).   Bethel was also 4-for-8 from behind the three-point line.

The Broncos had four players sink double digits with Louis Craft leading the way with 19.  Teammates Anthony Shelton followed with 18, Tyrrel Tate chipped in 17 and Seth Hawkins netted 10 points in the win.

The first half was closely matched with 19 lead changes and seven ties.  Neither team maintained control until the Hawks grabbed a six-point lead with 1:39 left in the half and a 35-29 advantage.  McDuffie scored nine of his 16 points in the first half, along with Bethel scoring eight of his 18 to give the Hawks a 35-29 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Chowan maintained the lead throughout the majority of the second half until the nine-minute mark when the Broncos rallied back to tie the score 51-51.  From there, both teams traded baskets until Fayetteville wrangled their biggest lead of the half with 1:29 left in the game and a 67-62 lead.

The game would go to down to the wire as Greg Alston threw up a three-pointer with one second on the clock to tie the score 70-70 and send the game into overtime.

Chowan was unable to hang on to the energy of the last second shot and trailed the entire overtime period.  The Hawks managed just five points in overtime: three from the charity stripe and a layup from Ashante Ross.

The 81-75 loss to Fayetteville State puts the Hawks at 5-4 overall and 0-1 in CIAA play.  The Broncos improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Chowan returns to action on Saturday when they host Shaw University at 4 p.m.
