MURFREESBORO– A 73-year-old motorist tragically lost his life here late Monday afternoon during a two-vehicle accident on US 258 south of Murfreesboro.

Roy Futrell of Indian Branch Road in the Ashley’s Grove community of Northampton County was killed in the 5:30 p.m. mishap, according to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper L. Bynum of the Troop C/District 8 office in Roanoke Rapids.

Bynum said the accident occurred approximately one-tenth of a mile north of the Parker Road intersection. There, Futrell was driving a 1999 Dodge pick-up truck south on US 258.

Meanwhile, William Moore of Murfreesboro was in the process of backing a 2004 International tractor-trailer into a private driveway off US 258. The 18-wheeler is owned by Henry Thomas Daye of Murfreesboro.

Bynum stated that Futrell’s truck impacted the trailer portion of the 18-wheeler and became wedged underneath. He added that Futrell was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moore was not injured.

Both lanes of US 258 were blocked until after 9 p.m.

Bynum said charges are pending based on further investigation into the details of the accident.
