NEWSOMS, VA —A local trucker faces charges in an accident that seriously injured a Chesapeake man here Wednesday.

Richard Hite, 43, suffered injuries after his compact car ran underneath a logging truck at 6:10 a.m. on General Thomas Highway in Newsoms, Virginia State Police reported. Hite was driving a 2006 Hyundai Sonata west of North Main Street and did not see the driver of a tractor-trailer backing into a logging path, police said.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Linbert Chamblee, 39, of Colerain, was charged with failure to yield to the right of way and driving under suspension.

Hite was flown to VCU Medical Center, police said. The Richmond hospital had no record of him, a hospital spokesman said.
