Elmer Ashley “Fluggie” Byrum

COLERAIN – Elmer Ashley “Fluggie” Byrum, age 83 of Perrytown Road, Colerain, died Monday, September 3, 2012 at his home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Byrum was born in Bertie County on December 30, 1928, a son of the late Emma Evans and George W. Byrum. A retired farmer, Mr. Byrum was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, a former volunteer fireman with the Perrytown Fire Department, and a former member of the Colerain Lion’s Club.

Mr. Byrum is survived by his loving wife, Mary Elizabeth Stratton Byrum; daughter, Judy B. Freeman and husband, David, of Colerain; son, Ashley Byrum and wife, Sue, of Colerain; grandchildren, Israel Byrum and wife, Courtney, Tracy Byrum and wife, Casey, Josh Freeman, Kyle Freeman and Lance Freeman; and great-grandchildren, Alyssa Byrum, Evan Byrum and Banks Byrum.

A celebration of life service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Bethany Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Tripp officiating.  Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie.

The family will receive friends at Garrett-Jones Funeral Home, Ahoskie, from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 4.
