Two bridges are scheduled to be replaced in the Roanoke-Chowan area.

Carolina Bridge Company has been awarded the contract to replace the spans in Hertford and Northampton County.

According to information from North Carolina DOT, the first of the two projects is scheduled to begin Monday, Sept. 3 near Jackson. There, Barrow’s Mill Road (SR 1126, approximately 2.2 miles west of US 158)) will be closed to thru traffic for the contractor to construct a new bridge over Gumberry Swamp.

US 158 can be used as the detour route during the project, which is expected to be completed in December.

One week later (Monday, Sept. 10), Carolina Bridge Company will begin a project to dismantle and construct a new bridge over Buckhorn Creek on the George Parker Road north of Como in Hertford County. The anticipated end date of that project is Nov. 16.

Traffic will be rerouted using US 258 and SR 1319 (Mill Neck Road).
