Witnessing RCCC growth

To the Editor:

As an employee at Roanoke-Chowan Community College under the leadership of Dr. Soney, I have been able to participate and witness the growth and prosperity of the institution.   These include the successful reaccreditation of the college by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as the ongoing updating of the campus facilities and the development of the new Weekend Boot Camps for Welding and Industrial Systems; whereas EMT, Fire, Emergency Services, and the Small Business Center continue to grow and serve the needs of the community.

By being a small campus it allows the staff, faculty, and students to gain first hand experiences.  These experiences vary from welcoming state representatives, inviting guest lecturers, to working on different campus projects through the development of college and community partnerships.  This dynamic learning environment facilitates working relationships within the institution, businesses, and citizens from the surrounding communities.

Being one of the 58 community colleges within the state affords individuals the opportunity to become involved in state and campus activities at both the student and employee level.  Here, at R-CCC, one is able to gain firsthand experience that is not always available at larger institutions.  I am sincerely appreciative of the different opportunities that this institution has provided me along with the ability to work with the dedicated staff, faculty, and community representatives who work together to serve the community.
