WINDSOR– A Raleigh woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash here Sunday afternoon.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper M.D. Simmons, two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions on U.S. 13  at approximately 5:30 p.m.  One of those vehicles, a Mercury Sport Utility Vehicle operated by Jack Byrd of Windsor, made a u-turn at the intersection of U.S. 13 and Grabtown Road.

Simmons said Byrd failed to yield the right-of-way and struck a Lincoln Town Car operated by Margaret Fuller, 78, of Raleigh.

The Lincoln spun in the roadway, according to Simmons, and came to rest off the highway to the right at which time the vehicle became engulfed in flames.

Byrd was charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.

The traffic fatality was the sixth of the year in the Highway Patrol’s Troop A/District II area which encompasses Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties.
