Grant aids West Bertie Media Center

KELFORD – West Bertie Elementary School has received a $5,000 grant for its MediaCenter.

During the regular meeting of the Bertie County Board of Education on July 3, members of the board unanimously approved accepting the grant from the Laura Bush Foundation for American’s Libraries Fund.

The grant will be used solely for the purchase of books and magazines for the library at West Bertie. The grant prohibits use for shelving, furniture, equipment, staffing and other items.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Debbie Harris-Rollins said the funding was a one-time grant which would be used at the school under the direction of West Bertie Principal Trey Peele.

Board member Rickey Freeman made a motion to accept the grant and the board voted unanimously to approve his motion.

In other business, the board:

  • approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Bertie County Schools and Martin Community College for classes to be offered to students at Bertie Early College High School;
  • agreed to a Memorandum of Understanding with East Carolina University in Greenville, also for classes to be taken by students at Bertie Early College High School;
  • awarded the milk products bid for Bertie County Schools in 2012-13 to Maola Milk and Ice Cream;
  • approved a pay scale for coaches that lowered the amount received by most coaches in the district;
  • tabled the second reading and approval of the 1000 Series of policies;
  • approved the contact for cleaning equipment with Municipal Asset Management; and
  • held a closed session to discuss personnel issues.
