AHOSKIE – Ahoskie Post 102 claimed the conference championship with a 4-3 junior American Legion victory over Edenton here Thursday night.

Eric Ortiz had a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh to lead Post 102 to the victory.

“This was a good win that clinched the championship for us,” Post 102 skipper Brandon Matthews said. “Ackerman (Grace) pitched a great game. He made Edenton put the ball in play where we played good defense.

“This was a good team effort,” he added.

Edenton began the scoring with a single run in the top of the first and then added another in the second to take a 2-0 edge.

Ahoskie finally got things going in the bottom of the second stanza.

Brandon Terry got things started with a single to left field before Grace followed with a base hit to right. Both runners scored when Everette Sawyer tripled to right field. Sawyer scored on an error on the play to make it 3-2 in favor of Post 102.

The teams held each other scoreless until the top of the seventh when Edenton tied the contest.

The winning run for Ahoskie came in the bottom of the same frame.

Ryan Weaver walked and moved to second when Bryan Merritt laid down a sacrifice bunt. Weaver then scored the game-winning run when Ortiz singled to center field.

Grace pitched a complete game, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six.

Post 102 collected five hits with Ortiz, Terry, Grace, Sawyer and Tyler Jones having a hit each.

Ahoskie improved to 10-9 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The team will travel to Currituck today (Saturday) for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.  in the regular-season finale.
