AHOSKIE – Ahoskie Post 102 continued its winning ways here Monday.

The Junior American Legion team secured a 6-2 victory over Elizabeth City Post 84.

Elizabeth City actually took the lead early, scoring two runs and taking that 2-0 advantage into the bottom of the fourth. That’s where the edge ended, however.

Eric Ortiz singled to center and Brandon Terry had an infield single. Both runners advanced on an error on the play, giving Ahoskie runners at second and third. Ackerman Grace’s RBI-groundout scored Ortiz and then Terry came home when Everette Sawyer singled to right.

Tyler Jones walked and he and Sawyer advanced on a wild pitch. Sawyer came home on an Austin Hurdle RBI-groundout to give Ahoskie a 3-2 lead.

Post 102 added another mark in the bottom of the fifth frame.

With two out, Ortiz singled, Terry walked and Grace was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ortiz scored on a Sawyer RBI-single and Ahoskie led 4-2.

The final two runs of the game came in the bottom of the sixth stanza.

Stephen Umphlett walked and advanced all the way to third on a Ryan Weaver single. Bryan Merritt then had an infield single to load the bases.

Terry plated both Umphlett and Weaver on a single, giving Ahoskie the 6-2 edge that proved to be the final score.

Ortiz started and pitched three and a third allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two. Umphlett tossed the final three and two-thirds allowing no runs on two hits. He struck out four.

Ahoskie had 11 hits, paced by Ortiz, who recorded three. Sawyer had two hits and a pair of RBIs as did Terry. Weaver and Merritt had two hits each.

Ahoskie improved to 7-6 overall with the win and 5-2 in conference play.

Post 102 will now host Edenton at 7 p.m. Friday and then travel to North Lenoir for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday.
