EDENTON – Billy Nixon and Tyler Burden combined for a two-hit shutout here Thursday.

That pitching effort led Ahoskie Post 102 to a Senior American Legion victory over Edenton by a final of 5-0.

Ahoskie had the first run of the game when they pushed across a mark in the top of the first inning.

Tyler Burden singled and went to second on a passed ball. He advanced to third via a steal and then scored on another passed ball to give Ahoskie a 1-0 lead.

Post 102 added three more in the top of the seventh.

Timmy Whitlow and Brandon Stifflemier drew walks before Burden belted a three-run homerun to left-center field and pushed Ahoskie to a 4-0 lead.

The final run of the game came in the top of the ninth.

Marvin Harrell doubled and went to third on a Daniel Merritt single. He scored on a balk to make it 5-0.

Nixon gave up just one hit in five innings of work and struck out six. Burden tossed the final four innings, allowing one hit while striking out four.

Post 102 had eight hits led by Burden who had two of those and three RBIs.

“This was a big win for us,” Post 102 coach Dave Ellis said. “We had great pitching from Billy and Tyler and played good defense. We now have two conference wins.”

Ahoskie is 2-8 overall and 2-2 in conference. They will play Smithfield, Virginia Sunday at home in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is 2:30 p.m.
