Kinston sweeps Ahoskie

AHOSKIE – Kinston swept a Senior American Legion doubleheader from Ahoskie Post 102 here Saturday.

The visiting squad won the first game 10-4 before taking the nightcap by a final of 9-1.

In the first game, Ahoskie scores a run each in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 4-0 lead.

Kinston rallied for four runs in the top of the sixth and tied the game at 4-all.

Post 49 then scored six runs in the top of the seventh and held off Ahoskie to post the victory.

In game number two, Kinston took a 4-0 lead after four innings.

Ahoskie’s only run came in the bottom of the fifth frame.

With two out, Brandon Stifflemier singled to right and moved to third on a Brock Merritt single to right. Timmy Whitlow then walked to load the bases.

Tyler Burden delivered an RBI-single to make it 4-1.

Kinston, however, scored five runs in the top of the seventh to take a 9-1 edge.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stifflemier walked, but was thrown out at third on a Brock Merritt single to left. A fly out and a ground out ended the game.

Tyler Pryor tossed six and one-third innings for Ahoskie. Will Glover and Stifflemier also pitched.

Ahoskie had six hit led by Brock Merritt two base hits.

“In the first game, we had a lead for the second straight game, but couldn’t hold it and lost,” Post 102 coach Dave Ellis said. “We are playing hard against good teams.”

Ahoskie is 1-7 and will play at Edenton Thursday. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
