FRANKLIN, VA – Daniel Edward “Dan” Herring, 88, a former resident of Ahoskie and a PGA golf professional since 1946, passed away June 1, 2012.

Born in Charlottesville, VA, he was a son of the late James Edward and Ollie Kirby Herring. He was a U.S. Golden Glove boxing champion in the 127 lb. weight class division in 1942 winning in Macon, GA and was a decorated WWII Army Air Force veteran wounded in New Guinea.

Dan was a PGA Golf professional for 66 years having played in three U.S. Opens, making the cut at Baltusrol in 1954 and the first U.S. Senior Open at Winged Foot in White Plains, NY in 1980, but was better known for his teaching and turf management ability and encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy golf. Dan’s last two clubs were at Beechwood Country Club in Ahoskie for 35 years and Cypress Cove Country Club for 12 years. He was a member of Ahoskie First Baptist Church.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Mary Jane Pace Herring; three sons, Daniel “Dan” Edward Herring, Jr. (Teresa) of Rocky Mount, Jack David Herring (Joan) of Courtland, VA and Charles Ernest Herring (Carolyn) of Colonial Heights, VA; sister, Lucille H. “Ceil” Mehanes (C.O.) of Charlottesville, VA; brother, Carroll “Buck” Herring (Peggy) of Petersburg, VA; five grandchildren, Trey Herring, Allison Elliott (Ben), Melissa Herring (Sandy), David Herring and Courtney Herring; two great grandchildren, Logan Elliott and Haley Byrum and a former daughter-in-law, Cynthia Rose (Larry) of Ahoskie.

Services are pending at Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, VA, and memorial donations may be made to First Tee of Hampton Roads, 2400 Tournament Drive Virginia Beach, VA 23456.
