Betty Butler Coulbourn

WINDSOR – Betty Butler Coulbourn, 94, of Windsor, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 in Norfolk General Hospital.

A native of Suffolk, VA, Betty was the daughter of the late Frank Edward Butler and Noelle Bradshaw Butler.  She graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in 1940, and in 1941 married Uriah Fooks Coulbourn. She then moved to Windsor where Uriah and his brothers had established Coulbourn Lumber Co. Betty was a wife and loving mother and worked at Coulbourn Building Supply Co. for many years until she retired to become a full-time mother.

Over the years she was active as a member of her college sorority, Alpha Omicron Pi, and served as president of the Windsor Woman’s Club. She was a member of the Windsor United Methodist Church, was in the choir for more than 30 years and served as the church treasurer for more than 10 years. She participated in numerous civic activities, including school programs, and gave of her time to many shut-ins and older Windsor friends and residents.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Uriah, who died in 2006.

Survivors include her daughter, Anne Coulbourn Lunsford, and her husband, Philip J. Lunsford II; and grandchildren, Jeanne Lunsford and Priscilla Lunsford, all of Windsor.  In addition she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who were frequent visitors to Windsor and the Coulbourn cottage at Nags Head. She was a wonderful hostess and welcomed all of her extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Windsor United Methodist Church, Queen Street, Windsor. Visitation will be held at her home at 606 Taylor Street following the service.
