CLINTON – Mrs. Ruth Doughtie Newton, 82, of Clinton, NC passed away at her home on Friday April 27, 2012.

A graveside service will be held on Friday May 4, 2012 at 12 noon at Ahoskie Cemetery in Ahoskie with Dr. William L. Hawkins officiating.

A celebration of the life of Mrs. Ruth Doughtie Newton will be held on Saturday May 5, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church in Clinton, N.C. with Dr. Louie V. Andrews III officiating.  The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Mrs. Newton was born in Ahoskie on November 12, 1929 to Floyd Thomas and Effie Mae Earley Doughtie and was the widow of the late J.B. Newton.  Before moving to Clinton, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Ahoskie where she served as a deacon and elder.  She also served as treasurer for New Hope Presbytery. While a member of First Presbyterian Church she received an Honorary Life Membership Award from the Presbyterian Women. Upon moving to Clinton in September 1991, she joined Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church where she served as an elder.

She was a retired teacher and homemaker. Granny Ruth was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by two sons, Dr. Tommy Newton and wife, Annette, of Clinton and Warren Newton and wife, Carolyn, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and six grandchildren, Callie, David, Laura, J.T., Whit and Will.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Thomas and Effie Mae Earley Doughtie; her husband, J.B. Newton; and one sister, Mary Louise Walker.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Graves Memorial Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 201 Fayetteville Street, Clinton, North Carolina 28328.
