School calendar approved for 2012-13

WINDSOR – The Bertie County Board of Education has approved the calendar for the upcoming school year.

The calendar begins for students on Monday, Aug. 27 when they report for their first day of school.

For teachers, the calendar starts Aug. 15, which is the first of two days of annual leave for teachers. Aug, 17 will be an optional workday followed by a trio of mandatory work days on Aug. 20-22.

Teachers will have another pair of optional work days on Aug. 23-24 before returning for the first day for students.

Students will get their first break on Sept. 3 when the school district recognizes Labor Day as a holiday.

The first quarter ends for students on Oct. 31. The other quarterly grading periods are slated to end on Jan. 18, March 28 and June 7, 2013.

Veteran’s Day will be observed Nov. 12 by the school district followed by a pair of days off for the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 22-23.

The Christmas holidays begin for students with an early-release day on Dec. 20. That break will continue until students return to school on Jan. 2, 2013.

The next holiday break for students will come on Jan. 21, 2013 with the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Students will then have a long stretch before their next break which comes April 1, 2013 as part of the Easter holiday. The school district will observe spring break for the remainder of that week.

Memorial Day will be observed on May 27, 2013 with that being the last day off from school until the second semester is scheduled to end on June 7.

Teachers will remain busy throughout the next few days as they have mandatory work days on June 10-11, 2013.

The school calendar contains 185 instructional days, the bulk of which are in October, January, February, March and May.
