William Grant “Bill” Dunning

William Grant “Bill” Dunning, age 83, beloved husband and father, died peacefully at Delaware Hospice Center on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.

He was born September 10, 1928 in Aulander, North Carolina, to the late Grover Cleveland and Goldie Dunning.  He attended Aulander High School and graduated at the age of sixteen.  He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950, served in combat in the Korean War and attained the rank of Master Sergeant.  Upon returning from the war he earned a B.S. in Mathematics from East Carolina University with the help of the GI bill.

Mr. Dunning was a high school mathematics teacher in eastern North Carolina for five years then went to the University of Virginia where he earned a master’s degree in Math Education.  He took a teaching position at Seaford Senior High School (DE) in 1963 and there met his wife to be, Jeanne Antoinette Ozon, a fellow first-year math teacher.  On August 21, 1965 they were united in marriage in Orleans, Massachusetts.  Mr. Dunning taught math and physics in Seaford until his retirement and taught in the GED program at Delaware Tech for fourteen years.

Bill and Jeanne traveled extensively, enjoyed skiing and made frequent visits to Mr. Dunning’s hometown.  Bill did all of the finish carpentry, masonry and landscaping of the family home in Seaford.  The Dunnings continued to travel and made two summer-long cross-country car trips with their daughters. In addition, Bill was an avid golfer and constructed the family summer home on Cape Cod from the ground up.

Mr. Dunning is survived by his wife, Jeanne; daughter, Annique; daughter and son-in-law, Claudine and Brian Hodges; half-sister and brother-in-law Ercel and Alonzo Pierce of Colerain, NC; sister Nancy Acree; and brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Marilyn Dunning of Aulander, NC; sister and brother-in-law Rebecca and Richard DeCoste of Greensboro, NC; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Diana Dunning of Star, ID; and sisters-in-law, Shirley Pierce and Judy Dunning.  Many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, other relatives and friends further survive him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a half-brother, James; two brothers, Lawrence and Carl; and brother-in-law Joseph E. Acree.

Funeral services for William Dunning will be held on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in Orleans, MA and a memorial service will be held Saturday, April 14, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. at Nanticoke Senior Center, Seaford, DE.
