Mrs. Willie G. Spencer

MURFREESBORO – Mrs. Willie G. Spencer was born in Murfreesboro, North Carolina on February 12, 1922 to the late George and Missouri Eley Gatling. Our beloved sister, aunt and friend departed this life on Sunday, April 1, 2012.

She attended Parker’s Grove Baptist Church, where she served as a faithful member until she moved to Durham, North Carolina, where she continued to serve a local church.

She attended high school at Waters Training School in Winton, North Carolina. After graduation from high school, she obtained a licensed Practical Nursing Degree from Watts School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina.

She was employed for more than thirty years by Duke University Hospital Systems and the Veteran’s Administrations Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.

She loved nursing and taking care of children and the elderly.

She was preceded in death by her husband ,Theodore Spencer; and siblings, Essie Smith, Thomas Gatling, George Gatling, Waverly Gatling, Elivia Gatling and Julia Gatling.

She leaves to cherish her memory one sister, Sarah G. Holley of Murfreesboro; seven nephews, Gary Holley (Sheila), Thomas Holley (Tammy), George Holley, and Tony Holley (Deidra) of Murfreesboro, Karl Holley (Paula) of Winton, Samuel Holley of Virginia Beach, VA, and Mark Holley (Vanessa) of Jacksonville, Florida; six nieces, Clementine Bowser of Hampton, VA, Joyce Mathis and Lee Fussell of Newark, NJ, Marjorie Carl of Connecticut, Vivian Holley of Wake Forest, and Ava Holley Closs of Raleigh. She also leaves a host of great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral will be held on Friday, April 6, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Parker’s Grove Baptist Church in Mapleton. The Rev. Fernando E. Temple Sr. will be officiating. Burial will be in the Eley Family Cemetery.
