Bridge work begins

Motorists using one major road inGatesCountywill face a detour in the coming weeks.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation and their bridge contractor, Lanford Bros. Co. Inc., are planning to close a section of NC 32 in the Corapeake community on Monday, March 12.

This closure will take place approximately 1,500 feet north of SR 1327 (Parkers Fork Road), or approximately 1.5 miles south of theVirginiastate line.

A signed detour will be in place to direct traffic around the work location via SR 1332 (Daniels Road).

According to the DOT’s Bridge Maintenance office inElizabethCity, this closure will facilitate partial removal of the existing bridge deck and replacement with a new riding surface.

The contract allows Lanford Bros. 90 consecutive calendar days to complete all work and reopen NC 32 to traffic.

Additionally, a section of SR 1428 (Bosley Road) inGatesCountywill close soon. NCDOT said work is needed to strengthen the framework under a bridge. That work is expected to last approximately one week.
