MURFREESBORO – Joseph Powell, the son of the late Charlie and Willie Mae Powell, died on February 17, 2012 at Vidant Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

He was the fifth of 13 children in his family. He worked for over 40 years at Georgia Pacific from where he retired. He lived at 227 Charlie Powell Road, Murfreesboro.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie Vaughan Powell of the home; four children (two preceded him in death), R’wanda Wilson of Newport News, VA, Linda Jones of Raleigh, Herman N. Powell of Virginia Beach, VA and William F. Powell of Ellicott City, MD; seven grandchildren; three great grandchildren; three sisters, Lula Bussey of Atlanta, GA, Sara Allen of Waldorf, MD and Mildred P. Cooper of Murfreesboro; one brother, Linwood Powell of Lynn, MA; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at New Haven Baptist Church in Murfreesboro. Rev. Lloyd Gatling will be officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
