Hey Hawks fans!

Second semester is well underway- and the craziness has begun! With Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Bowling, Men’s and Women’s Tennis, Baseball and Softball all in-season there is a lot to update you on.

Congratulations to Talaya Lynch on scoring her 1000th career point against Virginia Union!  What an accomplishment!

The Women’s Basketball team is back on track after picking up a solid win against Lincoln (PA) on Thursday night.  Down 22-9 early in the game, the Hawks battled and forced 22 Lincoln turnovers to rally for the win.

The team travels to Elizabeth City State on Saturday to finish out their long round of road games.  They’ll get another shot at Virginia Union as they return to the Helms Center on Monday night at 5:30 p.m.

Don’t forget that Monday February 13 is the Play4Kay game.  All proceeds collected during the game will be donated to breast cancer research.  Please come support this cause!

The Men’s Basketball team dropped a tough 64-63 loss to the Lincoln (PA) Lions on Thursday night.  The Hawks are right on the edge of picking up some wins; they have lost their last eight games by less than 10 points.

This Saturday will give them a chance to compete with a solid team: Elizabeth City State.  In their last match-up the Hawks came out on top.  Hopefully that will be the case on Saturday night as well.

The boys are back in town!

The Baseball team had a strong weekend showing against Coker last weekend.  They walked away 3-1, and they have their home opener this weekend against Mercyhurst College.  Game times are slated for noon on Saturday and Sunday.

The Softball team is home this weekend as well.  Friday the Hawks took on Mercyhurst College, and Sunday, we play Anderson at noon.

In other softball news, Saturday February 18 will be our Strike Out Cancer game.  We’ll be collecting money for cancer research- hopefully you can come and show your support!

The Women’s Tennis team had their first match last weekend against Barton.  Inesya Astrayan picked up right where she left off last year and picked up the lone victory for the Hawks.  The team travels to Mount Olive on Saturday.

]The Men’s Tennis team played at Barton last weekend as well, and they’ll travel with the women’s team on Saturday to take on the Mount Olive College Trojans.

The Women’s Bowling team had a strong showing last at the CIAA Northern Division Round-up.  They finished tied for third place and look to build on that performance this weekend in Charlotte at a CIAA Tournament.

The Chowan University Athletic Department recently announced the addition of a Women’s Lacrosse team for the 2013 spring season.  Eryn McCaffrey has been hired as Head Coach.  The team will be the first ever lacrosse team to compete for Chowan.  It will be really cool to see all of the “firsts” they are going to accomplish!

Finally, congratulations to Athletic Director Dennis Helsel on his recent nomination to Chair of the Division II Soccer Committee.

As always the CU Athletic Department remains busy.  Enjoy this weekend and come check out the Hawks in action.

Go Hawks!
