POWELLSVILLE – For the second time in six months, the North Carolina Department of Transportation will close a local road for an extended period in order to replace a bridge.

Center Grove Road (SR 1235) in Bertie County will be closed to thru traffic effective Monday, Jan. 9. The closure will allow crews to construct a new bridge over Stoney Creek. That bridge is located near the Williford Road intersection.

Traffic can use Jernigan Swamp Road, Lee Jernigan Road, Williford Road and/or US 13 to detour around the work site.

The bridge construction is expected to take approximately four months. The reopening of Center Grove Road is anticipated for mid-May.

In the summer of 2011, NCDOT closed US 13 south of Ahoskie to replace two bridges over Stoney Creek/Ahoskie Creek. That road reopened in late October.
