Fourth and Long

Last week I did a year ending editorial column stating New Year’s Resolutions I wished others might make. I will do the same thing here, however we will keep it strictly sports and drenched in sarcasm.

Tim Tebow should resolve to market himself this year. I really believe that if he just had the right marketing team that he could one day become a recognized celebrity. As far as being taken seriously as an NFL quarterback, I’m certain that if he string a few wins together that expert analysts from all over the country will sing his praises and take his game seriously.

Urban Meyer should resolve to not retire this year. He retired twice in the last 2 years and I’m certain Buckeye nation would appreciate it if he could manage to remain on the job for a while.

The NBA should resolve not to have a lockout this year. They lost a lot of money and once again put off a lot of fans. Nobody ever wins with a lockout.

The NFL should resolve to learn the same lesson.

The NCAA should resolve to start looking into college football and consider investigating some of the larger programs. They should ensure, however that they create no clear standard of practice or precedence with which future investigators or institutions could rely on. They should also try whenever possible to punish those not responsible for infractions instead of seizing opportunities to penalize those that broke the rules.

Miami, UNC and Ohio State should resolve to stay out of the news. If they can go an entire year without making sports headlines for things that don’t include wins or losses then I would consider the year a success. For three schools so accustomed to being in the spotlight I believe a year without it is just what each university needs.

Boise State should resolve to win more. If only they would win more games than certainly the BCS would allow them the opportunity to play and again beat big time college football teams. The BCS can’t just pretend like Boise State doesn’t exist can they?

Peyton Manning should resolve to campaign for the last ten years worth of MVP trophies. If ever you needed proof that Manning is THE most valuable player in the NFL team you need only look at the Colts this season. They go from Super Bowl contender to earning the first pick in the draft with little more than the loss of Manning to blame. The Patriots lost Brady a few years ago and still won 11 games.

Drew Brees should resolve to pass more. The dude has an ok arm; he and his coaches should trust it.

Brett Favre should resolve to come out of retirement. He didn’t un-retire even once this past season. If he is not going to come out of retirement than he should at least retire his mouth. Every time he opens it now he comes across as a bitter has been. He was simply too great for that.
