MURFREESBORO — As one of their first actions as a newly seated board, the Murfreesboro Town Council changed the schedule of their regular meetings.

Instead of meeting twice a month, the council will meet once a month each fourth Tuesday. They also decided to have that monthly meeting at 6 p.m.

Councilwoman Gloria Odum initially suggested having a 7 p.m. meeting.

Councilman Hal Thomas said he preferred to have meeting times earlier in the day.

“(Police) Chief (Darrell) Rowe and Mr. (Gene) Byrd (Public Works director) are salaried employees, I’m not sure about (other employees), they wouldn’t be paid to work over time,” Thomas said. “Other employees would require some extensive overtime if we had it at 7 o’clock at night.”

Thomas suggested having the meeting around 4 p.m.

Mayor Pro-Tempore Sarah Wallace suggested having one meeting a month and have the time at 5:30 p.m. to accommodate citizens that work during the day.

Odum said that was her point of having an evening meeting to give the average everyday working person access to a town meeting.

After further discussion, Odum moved to have the council meeting times each fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. and only to have that one meeting. Wallace offered a second and the motion passed without objection.
