COLERAIN –  James William Mitchell Sr., 89, of Glover’s Cross Road, Colerain, died Thursday, December 8, 2011 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

A native of Hertford County, he was born on October 4, 1922.

He was a member of First Baptist Church Colerain and was retired from Georgia-Pacific in Ahoskie after 32 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hattie Mitchell; a daughter, Dorothy Ann Mitchell; brothers, Raymond Mitchell, Rev. Cecil Ray Mitchell and Raleigh Mitchell; and sisters, Ruth Freeman, Annie Mae Lawrence, Hattie Viola Johnson and Evelyn Smith.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Annie Laura Rascoe Mitchell of Colerain; a son, James William Mitchell Jr. (Emma) of Colerain; daughters, Evon Mitchell of Powellsville, Carolyn Thompson of New York and Sharon Moore (Calvin) of Ahoskie; a brother, Jimmy Mitchell of Colerain; a sister, Helen Mitchell Thompson of Portsmouth, VA; grandchildren, Wendy Mitchell Herring, Eric Mitchell, Javon Mitchell, Dottie Mitchell, Tony Mitchell, Vickie Persaud, Gwen Mitchell; 18 great grandchildren; and two, great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at First Baptist Church Colerain by the Rev. McKinley Freeman. Burial was in the church cemetery.
