Chowan student assaulted

MURFREESBORO–  A lockdown was not needed here atChowanUniversityfollowing the Sunday night assault of a student at one of the male dorms on campus.

Earlier reports indicated that the campus was on lockdown, but a university official said that was not the case.

“AChowanUniversitystudent was taken toRoanoke-ChowanHospitaland subsequently released Sunday evening after an assault occurred in a residence hall,” said J.E. Barker, Director of University Relations. “During the immediate investigation, students were directed to remain in their rooms until it was determined that the campus was secure. Students were later informed that they were to attend classes as scheduled on Monday.”

Barker added that an investigation into the incident continues and is being handled by the university’s security team.

A spokesperson at the Murfreesboro Police Department said that MPD officers worked withChowanUniversity“through the night.”
