Children hurt in auto crash

WINDSOR – Three children were injured in an accident almost eight miles south of here Monday.

According to a report filed by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper J.V. Reid, a Windsor woman is facing two charges following the single vehicle accident.

Carol Spivey Lee, 55, of Cedar Landing Road is charged with careless and reckless driving and a child restraint violation following the incident.

According to the report, Lee was driving a 2001 Ford van on St. Francis Road (S.R. 1106) when, upon entering a curve, she ran off the road, overcorrected and traveled left of center. The van continued into the north bound lane, struck a ditch and then hit a tree after the initial impact.

Three children, two age two and one age four, were not secured in child restraint seating and were injured in the crash. They were all transported by Bertie Rescue to Bertie Memorial Hospital. Two of the children were from Williamston and one from Greenville. None were seriously injured.

Trooper Reid estimated the speed of the van to be 70 miles per hour.

The van was owned by Alice Balance of Cedar Landing Road.
