MURFREESBORO — The Murfreesboro Town Council has voted to allow a group to use town space for monthly meetings.

Last Tuesday, the council voted to allow the Communities and Schools of North Carolina organization to utilize the mayor’s office, located in the Murfreesboro Municipal building.

Councilwoman Gloria Odum presented her colleagues with information about the organization.

“The mission of Communities and Schools is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life,” she said.

She noted a recent group endeavor was providing students who did not have belts with the accessories so they did not get suspended.

Odum suggested since Mayor John Hinton does not use his office that the space be used on a limited basis for the organization’s meetings.

“The biggest thing that would happen there would be the monthly meeting,” she said.

Odum said approximately 20 people would attend the meeting.

Councilman Bill Theodorakis suggested the group use the council chambers instead to accommodate a large number of people.

“Twenty people will not work in there,” he said, referencing the mayor’s office.

Odum said the 20 people will not be in the space at one time.

Dan Hunt, sitting in the audience, asked if he could pose a question.

“My concern is if there is a national emergency and you’ve got someone in there working or if there is a new mayor,” he said. “I think it’s an inappropriate thing to do with the mayor’s office and using council’s chambers is more appropriate.”

Theodorakis suggested a trial basis of six months for the group using the office. Councilman Lloyd Hill offered a second and the motion passed without objection.
